In The News
IN THE NEWS: Some Recent Press SightingsAmericana Rhythm Magazine featured a nice article on my music in its nov/dec, 2005 edition. At one point, the writer describes my music as being "provocative". Hey, I'd argue if i could! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Shenandoah Valley Herald came out to see us play at the Wine Tasting/ Art Show/ Music Show at Baker's Store on April 22, 2006) Their reporter, Lisa McDonald then wrote up a very nice article on the event, with pictures and a description of the wine tasting. You can write to Lisa at svh@shentel.net. The piece ran in their April 26th edition. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Mount Jackson Art Group offered some kind words about my friends and I in their May, 2006 newsletter. Below is the article, reprinted: THANKS TO JOE HERBERT & FRIENDS We at The Art Group would like to thank Joe Herbert and all his jamming friends for performing at our anniversary celebration last month. Credit goes to Mark Barreres for providing the sound, and acting as emcee for the evening's festivities. A big shout out to those who joined Joe in making it a wonderful musical experience. Hank Zimmerman, Adam Smith, Steve Sober, Neil Schwartz, Mark Barreres., guest guitarists Gene and Dave, pianist Janus, and Louis the trumpet player. And any others that might have played but whose name we did not catch. For more on Joe and his buddies visit www.joeherbert.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Live Interview on WSVG The radio interview on Radio Station WSVG went extremely well. The show ran on Thursday, October 13th, the same night I hosted the "Locals Live" show in Strasburg, VA. The radio interview started off with me playing a live version of "Can't Slow Down", which they recorded right there at the studio. Host Clay Arthur then launched a few questions about my background and musical experience. We then talked about the new album, "The Route 11 Corridor", before playing a song from the upcoming CD. The next segment covered the various musicians whom i've been working with over the years. Cut to commercial, and another tune from the CD: "One Phone Call". The last segment discussed upcoming shows, and as the half hour drew to a close, we had just enough time to hear 'Scared' played on the radio for the first time, in its entirety. I'd say this radio interview went extremely well... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The Mountain - A very cool radio station located in Northeastern PA. The Mountain plays songs we just don't get to hear on any of the other stations, which have become so annoyingly sterile. (thanks, clear channel!) Both "Different World" and "Hippie Crack" have been getting some nice radio play on The Mountain, as they continue to support local musicians. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Diamond City Newspaper ran a nice ad for our recent show at the River Street Jazz Cafe in Plains, PA. (September 15th, 2005) The Jazz Cafe likes to book national acts, and there've been quite a few impressive performers who've graced that stage. The Ad included a nice photo right at the top of the page. There were also several radio ads being run on 102.3 The Mountain, Rock 107, and 97.9 WBSX, so we got some much appreciated publicity while we were in town. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For the past 4 years, Channel 33, the information superchannel out in the Shenandoah Valley, has been running announcements of all my gigs, and I didn't even realize it until some friends tipped me off about it a few months back. I've since met with the head honcho, Hank Zimmerman, who tells me he's interested in working together on an upcoming project or two. Hank is a computer whiz from way back, having started Shenandoah Technology Systems back in the early 90's, before selling it off in 1996. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This Interview with Metro Music Connection came out right after we recorded the first Indoe Loop CD in April of 2001. Northern Virginia Daily Interview by Vicki Waltz -August 13, 2004. Broadside Interview at George Mason University-conducted in 2001, outside a bar in Alexandria, VA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Here's some other stuff you may have missed: The "Larz from Mars Show" has been running in rotation in the Greater Washington, DC/ NVA area on channel 10 and channel 69. It was a total trip doing that show, which initially aired on December 29th. Indoe Loop alumnus Chris TerraFranca joined me on lead guitar, and it actually came out quite good. I've got a copy of not only the episode itself, but the raw footage of us doing 5 songs. If you live in the DC/ NVA area, do check it out, cuz that show is just plain nuts! And if you're interested in adding this splendid video to your collection, get in touch with me and I'll see what I can do about getting you a copy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In May of 2004, I was named as "Musician of the Month" once again over at Shenandoah Music.Com. The write up was really generous, mentioning some upcoming gigs, recordings of live shows, and the folks I've been jamming with here in the area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ June, 2004 there was a real cool piece in the Bryce Mountain Courier, describing an upcoming gig in Strasburg. I had no idea they were running it, but was very happy when someone showed it to me. I also got a mention in the very widely circulated Shenandoah Parks and Rec newsletter last month. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RADIO ADS We've been getting some new radio commercials out during the past several months, and man, you should hear them! The first one was for the gig at Chappalino's in May, and was done by the kind folks at WAMM in Woodstock, VA. They have a bit of a smaller audience, so we decided to run the next spot (Hungry Dog show) on the much larger "WINC FM" which broadcasts clear out to Washington DC and all over Northern Virginia. In between the narrative, I managed to squeeze in samples of "heaven", "can't slow down" and "truth", all in a 30 second spot. They've also been running announcements for my shows at The Village Idiot, Chapp's, and several others. Nice. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ They did a really nice article on ShenandoahMusic.Com this week. The December 4th (2003) issue had a few Joe Herbert mentions, as well as lots of references to my musical friends in the area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The Winchester Star" (July 20th, 2003 edition), contacted me to do a piece on the upcoming SoundQuilt Music Fest. I quickly notified Mark Stewart of Walnut Grove, who was the co-ordinator of the event, and asked him to come along for a very cool interview at the newspaper of Right Wing Republicans. The reporter whose name was "Star", was really nice, and seemed very interested in how the SoundQuilt thing came about. We took turns answering her questions, and she ran a very fine article on not only SoundQuilt, but on my music as well. She also tossed in a few photos, including the one taken of me by Brian Shupe at the State Theatre Show. I put up some shots of the 2004 SoundQuilt Music Festival on my photos page. If you got a second, get over there and check it out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The Shenandoah Valley Herald" (August 27th, 2003 edition), see a half page article about my musical background, influences, and experiences writing and performing around Virginia, Baltimore and DC. It was pretty decent. I especially liked when they said I "don't want to sign with any label", and that I "rebel against being told what kind of music to produce." Whoah... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Inside the September 2003 issue of Mind Candy, you'll find a very positive review of our show down at the Edinburg Concert Series this summer. Written by Jade Michael Crusemark, the review features some interesting comments about the music we played. Take, for instance, this one: "a distinctive, simple, yet highly improvisational presentation of original music,..endearing and honest". hmmm... Or how about, "Joe's music...creates a mosaic of emotions that are at once clear and concise, as well as psychedelic- perfectly balanced!" yo- that's what I'm talkin' bout. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
